GUIDE TO YACHTING IN ASIA

Yachting in Asia has never been more popular. The Hurun Global Rich List 2024 reveals that China holds the largest number of billionaires globally, boosting the continent’s increasing population of high-net-worth individuals. With more than a thousand billionaires in Asia, the demand for luxury activities, such as superyacht charters, is also growing.

As Asia’s economy continues to thrive, the superyacht industry is expanding rapidly. New marinas, luxury yacht services, and exclusive sailing destinations are emerging, positioning the region as a premier yachting hub.

Geographically, Asia has five regions: Central Asia, South Asia, East Asia, Southeast Asia, and West Asia (commonly known as the Middle East). This guide focuses on the first four regions. For a comprehensive overview of yachting in the Middle East, please refer to our dedicated Middle East yachting guide.

What to Expect in Yachting in Asia?

Due to its vastness, yachting in Asia is incredibly diverse. From the cold waters of the Caspian Sea to the warm, turquoise waves of the Andaman Sea, each region offers a unique and captivating experience. The World Conservation Monitoring Centre named 17 megadiverse countries, five of which are in Asia: China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines. The Coral Triangle, which shelters about 75% of the world’s coral species and is one of the global hotspots of marine life, is also part of Southeast Asia. In addition to that, the region’s wealth of culture, history, and deep-rooted traditions gives Asia an infinite possibility of fun and adventure.

What are the Rules and Regulations in Chartering a Yacht in Asia?

Asia offers a variety of luxury yachts for charter, including motor yachts, catamarans, and sailing yachts, though regulations differ by country.

  • In Thailand, the Asia Pacific Superyachts Association mentioned that foreign-flagged yachts over 30m can now obtain charter licenses without paying 7% VAT on the yacht’s value. However, only licensed crews are allowed. Yachts typically range from 20 to 80 meters.
  • Hong Kong and Macau require foreign yachts to obtain a cruising permit, with overnight charters often restricted. Yachts up to 50 meters are common.
  • According to Asia Pacific Boating and Global Times, the government has eased restrictions in Hainan, China, allowing more foreign charters. The yachts typically range from 30 to 70 meters.
  • Indonesia requires a CAIT permit for foreign yachts, and regions like Raja Ampat may impose environmental fees; yachts range from 15 to 60 meters.
  • In Malaysia, Langkawi operates as an open registry under the Langkawi International Yacht Registry (LIYR), allowing foreign yacht ownership and registration. The island offers tax-friendly policies, including duty-free status and exemptions on import duties for yachts. Langkawi is a popular destination for long-term yacht stays, with vessels up to 50 meters commonly seen in its well-equipped marinas.

Please check the latest regulations and provisions before planning a charter in any of these countries.
